Perineal urethrostomy © Norsworthy et al, 1998 The Feline Patient. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Penile urethrostomy is the surgical procedure of choice for male cats that suffer repeated episodes of urethral blockage as a result of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). It is also indicated for urethral trauma or associated penile/urethral cancers. A pre-operative Xray often confirms suspicions of a calculi (stone) causing blockage in the urethra.
When performed, a urethrostomy prevents further blockage of the urethra by calculi (urinary stones). The procedure requires neutering (desexing) and is sometimes called a 'sex change' operation.
Post-operative care The cat should be monitored post-operatively as urinary/urethral infections are common immediately after surgery due to the extensive tissue damage incurred during the surgery. However, the long term prognosis following this type of surgery is excellent. It is recommended that an experienced surgeon be procured to perform the surgery. |
